Well, there are no negative calories foods. This diet is a complete FAD.
You will read or hear some say that certain foods like celery, carrots and lettuce have negative calories.
It’s said that it takes more calories to eat, digest and process them, meaning you would lose weight by eating them since it would take more calories than they have to digest them.
That is completely false.
Digestion of food is based on thermic effect of food, and for a food to have negative calories, its thermic effect would be at 100%.
The body uses a percentage of the calories you eat to digest them, for example; when you consume 100 calories, the body stores about 90% and uses the rest for digestion.
Foods have different thermic effects based on percentage, foods with the highest thermic effect are proteins whose thermic effect is 20%, and celery only has 8%. For a food to have a negative calorie, its thermic effect should be 100% or more.
When you consume carrots celery, lettuce and other vegetables such as cucumber, they contain a lot of water and fiber, making them low calorie and thus you may lose weight on them.
Remember you cannot consume them only, just be sure to include them in your meals more often.
To lose weight you need to be on a low calorie diet but also one that is nutrient dense. Always visit a Registered Dietician and Nutritionist for help on calorie counting.
